NFL: Michael Vick suspended for dogfighting charges

Michael Vick, profesional football player from the Atlanta Falcons, has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL just today. The punishment was handed down hours after he acknowledged in court papers that he bankrolled gambling on dogfighting and helped kill some of the animals not worthy of the pit.

In fact, the National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell stated that he'll review the status of the suspension following the conclusion of legal proceedings.

Despite the allegations, Vick insists he placed no bets of his own nor took any winnings. But Goodell says Vick's actions in funding the betting and his bond with illegal gambling both violate the terms of the NFL contract.

What's more, he assures that Vick's admitted conduct was "not only illegal but also cruel and reprehensible." Vick also was exposed to corrupting influences in derogation of 1 of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL pro player, according to Goodell.

It's important to mention that Vick was Raised in a public housing project in Newport News, Virginia, and he was a stand-out high school football player who attended Virginia Tech, where he led the Hokies to a 20-1 record over two seasons before entering the National Football League draft.

Vick was the first selected player in the 2001 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He was the first African-American quarterback taken with the first choice.

Unfortunately, he has lost major endorsements since the case broke. Nike suspended the release of a new Michael Vick shoe due to hit stores in August and Reebok stopped selling his jerseys.

Soccer: Beckham to miss next game in the MLS, ankle still hurts

Los Angeles Galaxy new star, David Backham, has played three matches in the last six days, including one in Europe. That's why the coach decided to rest him for the next game against Colorado Rapids.

Indeed, the British player will not fly with the Galaxy to Denver on Saturday and will miss the team's match against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.

According to official sources, coach Frank Yallop had made the decision not to take Beckham on the road after the England midfielder had played three full encounters in six days, including back-to-back matches on two continents on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Indeed, David Beckham's suspect left ankle was visibly swollen after the 3-0 loss to Chivas USA on Thursday night.

"We must focus on healing David's injury," Alexi Lalas said. The Galaxy president is really worried about Beck's ankle, and don't want to take any chance.
